The Kalandra Volunteer Certificate is designed so anyone can learn about infection control, basic health and safety, and skills for supporting others. Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion as evidence of their new knowledge and organisations can have confidence in their “Volunteer workforce” capability.

Dementia Care 

 Kalandra has two NZQA approved Certificates which train Health Care Assistants to provide the highest standard of care and support for clients with Dementia in a home care, residential facility or support organisation environment.

Both programmes are delivered ONLINE with no time off work required. Students are provided with an individual learning plan and are supported throughout their study by experienced lecturers.

As a guide some of the issues, practices and skills covered in the two Dementia Care Certificates are:

  • Stages and Types of Dementia: Early warning signs and process for diagnosing dementia. Stages of dementia – Early, Moderate and Advanced. Types of dementia including Alzheimer’s, Vascular Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia, Frontal and Temporal Lobe Dementia. 

  • Communication and Vulnerability: Understand the impact on a person’s actions and ability to communicate, and increased risk from vulnerability, abuse and neglect.
  • Professional Practices: Safe and ethical professional practices. How to identify triggers, manage behaviours and access support services available. 
  • Person-centred Care: Understand and respect cultural backgrounds. Provide person-centred care to support a person through the different stages of dementia progression.

Programme / Training Scheme Purpose

Improvements in medical care and lifestyles means people are living longer and the fastest growing demographic internationally is 65 and over. With longer life spans there are also increasing numbers being diagnosed with dementia and that number is expected to triple in the next 35 years. The primary purpose of these two Health Care Support programmes is to meet the increased demand for dementia-qualified Health Care Assistants who understand the progression and effects of dementia and can provide optimal care and attention which enhances the client’s daily living experience or health outcome.

The purpose of the Certificate in Mental Health Support (Dementia Care) (Level 4) is to provide Aged Care or Dementia Support organisations with Level 4, fully-qualified HCA graduates who have the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to work with clients diagnosed with dementia. This is an entry-level qualification designed for students already working in, or those who intend to develop a career supporting the health and wellbeing of these clients as well as their family and/or whanau.

Graduates of this programme will have HCA Level 4 status and pay parity.

The purpose of the Certificate in Management of the Dementia Client in a Care Facility (Level 4) (Training scheme) is to enable HCA learners employed in a health care facility who may be relying on generic care and skills to undertake formal study in Dementia Care to enrich their own practice in the care of clients. The training scheme will provide introductory skills and future employment opportunities for learners who don’t have the time to commit to the full 46-week Certificate programme. It has been developed in response to the number of Aged Care Providers/Employers and Health Care Assistants who require special interest courses in Dementia Care as part of their professional development/continuing education responsibilities.

This training scheme will not of itself provide pay parity for graduates
